I meant to post these last weekend, but I got distracted with work. I hope they're still useful for folks.

I've been doing a lot of experimenting this month with composite images and different methods in Paint Shop Pro. I haven't had much time to write because of the contractors working in my building and stuff, so PSP has been my main creative outlet.

I've got a bunch of stuff that I'm going to post as resources. I'll be linking to my design blog, Encompass--rose.blogspot.com.

I'd like to make some icons soon, but I can't make any promises. It's been so long since I've done any that it seems like most of my cap sources aren't online anymore.

Since I've managed to get everything I wanted to post zipped and previews made, I'm going to make an announcement:

From December 1st-January 31st, all new graphic resources I post will be unrestricted, meaning you can use them free free for commercial purposes--NEW resources excludes the ones I've zipped tonight. But, if you enjoy my resources, check out the blog and get yourself some HQ unrestricted freebies in December and January.

Encompass Rose supporters will also have the opportunity to request an extra gift over the holiday seasons.

Happy holidays!

I went to sign in to my photobucket account this morning and the site had been totally revamped (again.) Except this time--unless I'm just blind and can't find it--it looks like they're getting rid of the "select all>generate link code" feature that I rely on for posting my icons. The new site's in beta right now, so they may fix this later, but if that feature goes, my iconning days are over. Sorry to all those who've enjoyed my icons over the years and I appreciate your support. It's just very much not worth to make the size batches I make and have to copy-paste the links by hand.

I'm going to be making some slight changes. It shouldn't affect very much. I will leave all my current resources up, but I am looking at the possibility of creating a more serious digital design portfolio. I'd like to go back to school for graphic design in the future, and I think this would be a good step for me. I have been experimenting in digital art that is not fandom related, and I would like to keep so-out-of-ideas and so-out-of-icons primarily as fandom outlets, so I will be looking for a new home for my textures and other design resources where I can also include my non-fandom artwork. I will continue to post update notices on the resources here, so if you're watching for the resources, you will still see them. The links will just eventually be going somewhere else.

I'm a dork. I also meant to announce the creation of some new public Dreamwidth communities: [community profile] iconophile for resource sharing, [community profile] 100x100hush and [community profile] 100x100blank for graphic sharing.

I am lazy. I don't want to make 3 posts for one episode. LJ's character limit keeps killing this post, so I'm just posting here and linking.

I opened requests last weekend in honor of my birthday. While filling one of them I was randomly inspired to make some other icons. Some Star Trek: TNG, some inspired by my original fiction:

+Steve Bacic: Ahve Servena/Roshan
+Robert Downey Jr: Edric Hunt/Dred
+Nikki Sixx: Kent

+Gabriel insists that I say "Dred. Not Mac." and for anyone who doesn't know what that means, assume I'm insane.

+Icons #51 and 59 were made for [livejournal.com profile] mr_picard. Of course, he's welcome to use whichever ones he wants, but those two are not up for sharing purposes without his permission.

First off, Happy Birthday to me. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

Secondly, in honor of my birthday, I am opening graphic requests for the weekend. Graphic requests only. No tutorials, vids, or fics, please. I'm not up to those, they take longer. Check here for guidelines on requesting.

Second old tutorial post from LJ

Two more tutorials, one by request and one just because I wanted to do it.

Requested by [personal profile] trekchic. Uses caps by [personal profile] iamleaper. This is incredibly simple, but given my last tutorial which was a pain in the neck, I'd also like to point out that you don't always have to use complicated methods to make an attractive icon, so I decided to write the tutorial.

We'll be going from:

this to

This is a PSP 8 Tutorial. Translates easily to other versions of the program; not sure about PS and GIMP since I haven't tried it. Like all my tuts, this is meant to be beginner friendly, so there are detailed explanations, even about things that you may find obvious if you've been doing this for a while. My goal is to answer questions I have been asked and to address issues I've seen around the icon sharing comms. Feel free to skip anything you don't need.

I've seen a lot of tutorials around that have to do with getting rid of blue (green/red/whatever color) that overpowers a screencap. The actions in the tutorial are really nothing new, but I wanted to give a go of explaining why it works the way it does, which I really haven't seen. Most of the time you get a simple list of actions. The basic principle may work on other screen caps with blue lighting, but it doesn't help someone figure out what to do with green or red.

We'll be going from this ugly blue cap to

This is an old tutorial post I never moved over from my LJ. There is one other one I found that I'll be moving.

Old post Below:
This is a technique I developed while trying to brighten some horribly dark screencaps in Urgo where the subjects were practically invisible. The icon is simple, but given what the base looked like to begin with, I felt it was worth a tutorial.

And here's another horribly dark to bright and pretty tutorial. This time using the whole team and some warm colored gradients. I developed this technique to enhance the desert in my Dune icons, but it works brilliantly on dark caps too.

Okay, I'm in a tutorial groove now so here are a couple of more quick ones. First, Janet. Using my La Fuerza De Mi Corazon texture set.

And one last one with Sam, another really dark cap with a bit of a different effect added this time.

And, ladies and gentlemen, thus concludes today's installment of Iconning with SG-1. :P

Seriously, please let me know if you have any trouble following these steps. I'd be happy to help if I can.
